Detroit, Michigan, has achieved a significant milestone in vehicle electrification by completing the installation of the nation’s first wireless-charging public roadway using technology from Electreon.
The road on 14th Street now features inductive-charging coils that charge electric vehicles (EVs) equipped with receivers as they drive, addressing range limitations of EVs. The wireless charging technology is being tested in a real-world environment between Marantette and Dalzelle streets before becoming available to the public in the coming years.
The wireless-charging system is based on inductive coupling between copper coils beneath the road and receivers on the underside of electric vehicles, ensuring safe and controlled energy transfer. The initiative supports the growth of EV usage, offering a reliable charging source without disrupting commutes.
