After more than 14 years in the making, a pumped hydro water battery in Switzerland is finally complete and operational.
The pumped hydro water battery is a form of energy storage that uses two reservoirs at different elevations to store and release water. The water is pumped from the lower to the upper reservoir when there is surplus electricity, and released back to the lower reservoir when electricity is needed.
This innovative technology can store 20 GWh of power and surpasses that of 400,000 electric car batteries. While pumped hydro cannot provide the lithium-ion battery’s frequency and voltage stabilization services, it can store energy for months or even years.
It is an exciting new development in the field of energy storage and a glimpse into the future of clean energy storage.
