Water shortages are expected to hit the United States as early as 2024. In response to this, a company called Epic Cleantec has come up with an innovative solution: beer made from recycled wastewater.
The company, which specializes in wastewater treatment systems, created a Kölsch-style ale called Epic OneWater Brew using purified shower, laundry, and sink water. They collect wastewater from buildings and filter it using ultrafiltration membranes that are incredibly small. The water is then disinfected with ultraviolet light, creating a safe end product that meets drinking water standards.
Although they can’t sell the beer due to strict laws, they are giving it away for free to raise awareness about water reuse. By using beer as a medium, Epic Cleantec aims to educate people about the potential of water reuse and the importance of understanding how water works.
