The Float: A sustainable, floating home

Studio RAP’s innovative design for a floating home in the Netherlands is a stunning example of sustainable architecture

The Float is a modular home made up of a series of atmospheres designed for different living functions. These atmospheres are joined together to create a singular appearance, with each module being rotated and extra panels placed in between, resulting in a unique folding design. The interior is filled with natural light, and the exposed timbers give the space a light and bright feel.

The exterior is made with dark cork, a plant-based material that matches the existing historical atmosphere of the city. The cork insulation used in the design is low-density, while high-density cork forms the outer layer. These layers are joined with a cork mortar layer, making the home not only visually stunning but also highly energy-efficient.

Its floating design means that it has a low carbon footprint and doesn’t take up any land space. Inside and out, this home honors the natural world and demonstrates that sustainable living can be both beautiful and functional.
