Betavolt, a Chinese startup, claims to have developed the world’s first mass-produced nuclear battery, known as BV100, which is about the size of a coin and can generate electricity continuously for 50 years.
Nuclear batteries are claimed to have an energy density over 10 times that of ternary lithium batteries and can store 3,300 megawatts in just one gram without the risk of fire or explosion. They are designed for stable power generation in various environments and loads, with safety assured for medical devices within the human body.
Betavolt plans to launch a 1-watt battery by 2025 and envisions potential applications, including powering mobile phones indefinitely and enabling continuous flight for short-flight drones. The development positions China ahead in advancements related to atomic energy batteries and fourth-generation diamond semiconductors.
