Global mining company Anglo American has unveiled the world’s largest hydrogen-battery hybrid mine haul truck that can help cut emissions.
The truck has a combined capacity of 2MW, featuring a 1.2 MWh battery pack and a haul truck system that uses multiple fuel cells, delivering up to 800kW of power. It can carry a 320-ton payload and generates more power than its diesel predecessor, which consumes 35.3 gallons of diesel per hour, with a payload capacity of around 220 metric tons. The haul truck is also the world’s lightest 510-ton truck.
If the pilot truck is successful, the company plans to replace its fleet of 40 trucks. As a result, it could remove up to 80 percent of diesel emissions at their open-pit mines.
