Global temperatures are projected to reach record levels in the next five years, driven by greenhouse gas emissions and an anticipated El Niño event, as stated in a recent update by the World Meteorological Organization.
The report indicates a 66% chance that the annual average global temperature between 2023 and 2027 will exceed 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels for at least one year. Additionally, there is a 98% likelihood that one of the upcoming five years and the entire five-year period will become the warmest ever recorded.
WMO emphasizes the significance of a warming El Niño event, which, combined with human-induced climate change, will push global temperatures into uncharted territories.
The report underscores the need to strengthen climate services to support adaptation to climate change, including early warning systems and monitoring greenhouse gas. It emphasized the far-reaching consequences of a higher global temperature on crucial aspects such as health, food security, water management, and the environment, stressing the importance of preparedness.
