Non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (Nash) is a condition where fat builds up in the liver, causing inflammation and scarring.
Currently, there are no medications to treat Nash, so weight loss is the main recommended treatment. However, regular weight loss methods may not be enough to reduce liver fat and inflammation. A recent study showed that a “soups and shakes” diet, commonly used for obesity and type 2 diabetes, could help reduce the severity of Nash.
It showed that this rapid weight loss approach was safe and resulted in significant improvements in liver health, surpassing the effects of medication. Further research is needed to confirm these findings in a larger and more diverse group of participants.
Additionally, whether this approach can benefit patients with more advanced liver disease remains to be seen. Nonetheless, the study offers promising evidence that the “soups and shakes” diet is safe and effective for improving liver health in people with Nash.
