The Singapore Food Agency approved lab-grown meat for sale in stores. It is the first time that cultured meat has been approved for human consumption.
The “chicken bites”, produced by the US company Eat Just, have passed a safety review by the Singapore Food Agency and the approval could open the door to a future when all meat is produced without the killing of livestock.
The cells used to start the process come from a cell bank. No slaughter of chickens is required because cells can be taken from live animals. The nutrients supplied to the growing cells are all from plants.
This technology has huge potential implications for our future.
If we can produce all our meat in labs, there will be no need to raise animals for meat. As a result, we can potentially free up as much as three quarters of all agricultural land worldwide because that’s how much is currently used for grazing and growing animal feed.
It also means that meat lovers will be able to enjoy their juicy steaks without feeling bad about their environmental impact.
