Coffee consumption linked to lower bowel cancer risk and improved survival

A recent observational study in the Netherlands suggests that coffee consumption may lower the risk of colorectal cancer recurrence and early death in patients.

Drinking at least two cups of coffee daily was associated with a reduced likelihood of cancer relapse, with the most significant benefits seen in those drinking three to five cups daily. However, excessive coffee intake did not provide additional advantages and could adversely affect health.

While coffee’s antioxidant properties and potential gut microbiome modulation are proposed explanations, more in-depth investigations are necessary to establish a cause-and-effect relationship. These findings could guide future intervention studies and contribute to developing guidelines for bowel cancer patients regarding coffee consumption.
