A Microsoft chatbot can digitally reincarnate someone after passing away.
The chatbot would use electronic messages to create a digital persona in a person’s likeness. It would use machine learning to respond to text messages. It would also use rich voice data to create vocal likeness – someone relatives could speak with, through a phone or a humanoid robot.
Microsoft representatives admitted that the chatbot is quite disturbing and that there are currently no plans to produce it. However, technical tools and personal data are in place to make digital reincarnations possible. If chatbots and holograms from beyond the grave are set to become commonplace, new laws need to be drawn to govern them. After all, it looks like a violation of the right to privacy to digitally resurrect someone.
