Making Ccement from electricity

Concrete, which relies on cement, is a vital construction material globally, but it is also a significant source of global carbon emissions, which accounts for about 8% of the total.

Sublime Systems developed an electrochemical process to make cement using electricity instead of traditional fossil fuel-intensive methods. This approach, often described as the “electric vehicle of cement making,” offers a more efficient and cost-effective solution to decarbonizing cement production.

The company completed a pilot plant and is now working on delivering its product to partners.

Their next goal is to establish a demonstration plant with a capacity of 30,000 tons per year. While financial incentives, such as carbon pricing, motivate cement producers to adopt greener technologies, Sublime Systems aims to provide a solution that outperforms traditional cement without compromising performance.

By utilizing electrochemistry and renewable energy sources, Sublime Systems is determined to significantly impact climate change and inspire innovation in the cement industry.
