Deforestation in the Amazon Rainforest has decreased substantially by 55% this year, reaching the lowest levels since 2019.

Monitoring the Andean Amazon Project data utilized the European Space Agency’s Sentinel-2 satellite to track forest cover and loss across all Amazonian nations. Brazil exhibited a notable 59% drop in primary forest loss, aligning closely with figures from Brazil’s government. Peru and Colombia also experienced significant reductions in forest loss by one-third and two-thirds, respectively. Former guerillas transitioning to environmental work in Colombia might contribute to the noteworthy decline.

The decreased deforestation rates are anticipated to bolster the negotiating positions of Amazonian countries in securing international conservation funding, particularly at upcoming summits such as COP28 for the Paris Agreement signatures.
