Researchers from Northwestern University, MIT, and the University of Vermont utilized AI to design a peculiar walking robot.
In just 26 seconds, the AI-generated a blueprint for a “small, squishy, and misshapen” robot that walks through spasmodic movement when filled with air. The final design looks nothing like any known animal but successfully walks when inflated.
The researchers found that AI can lead to unconventional and unexpected results, offering new possibilities that humans might not have considered when designing robots.
Traditionally, human-designed robots tend to resemble familiar objects, but AI-driven design can push the boundaries of creativity, producing unconventional yet functional solutions in robotics. The study showcases how AI can diverge from conventional design principles to create unique solutions.
