Airbus hydrogen hub

Airbus partners with gas firm Linde to develop green hydrogen hubs at airports.

With the collaboration, the aerospace company seeks more sustainable sourcing of the gas, unlike the more traditional fossil-sourced hydrogen.

At present, Airbus is considering two pathways for hydrogen in aircraft.  The first is using the gas as is by deploying it in modified gas turbines or in a fuel cell.  The second is using it as a feedstock to produce new fuels.

Several pilot projects will begin next year.  The two companies will also collaborate on an assessment of electro-fuels.  Currently, airports in France, Italy, Japan, Singapore, and South Korea, have signed on to the hub concept.

The advantage of this technology is that it can potentially power large aircraft over long distances without undesirable carbon dioxide emissions.

Will hydrogen-powered aircraft be the future of air transport?  Let us know your thoughts.
