Ultra-long fiber battery can stretch for miles

Researchers at MIT developed the world’s longest flexible battery, a rechargeable lithium-ion unit in the form of an ultra-long fiber.

The battery is 460 feet or 140 meters long.  The length of the battery is a proof that the material can be manufactured to arbitrarily long lengths, kilometers even, thus signaling a breakthrough in wearable battery technology.

The fiber battery opens up a myriad of opportunities for self-powered communications, sensing, and computational devices that could be worn like ordinary clothing, which is weavable, washable, and completely self-contained.

The material can also be used in 3D printing to make complex solid, water- and weatherproof objects that incorporate a battery, including all the active materials.
