The Dutch company Lightyear created a solar electric vehicle that can run for months without being plugged in.
The car consumes only 83 Watt-hours per kilometer, which is three times less than any other electric vehicle on the market today. Furthermore, using the built-in solar panels, it can charge itself at a rate of 12 km per hour. Given that the average commute time in Europe is roughly 30 minutes, many drivers can perform their daily commute through solar power only.
Lightyear successfully conducted 20 durability test runs and demonstrated the vehicle could drive 441 miles or 709 km on a single charge.
The company’s goal is to deliver a car that will only need to charge once or twice a year for every average European driver.
