A new study suggests that people with type 2 diabetes may be able to stop taking medication by adopting a low-carbohydrate diet, which could improve beta-cell function in the pancreas.

Researchers found that patients who reduced carb intake showed significant improvements in insulin production, with beta-cell responses increasing up to two-fold. The study, involving 57 adults, compared low-carb and high-carb diets over 12 weeks and found that Black participants saw a 110% improvement in beta-cell response, while white adults saw a 48% improvement compared to high-carb groups. However, further research is needed to confirm if a low-carb diet can restore beta-cell function and achieve diabetes remission.
