Oran Knowlson, a 13-year-old from Somerset, England, endured treatment-resistant epilepsy for thirteen years until receiving a groundbreaking brain implant as part of a human trial.
This implant, designed to treat Lennox-Gastaut syndrome, a severe form of epilepsy, has significantly reduced Oran’s seizures. Implanted electrodes in his brain deliver constant neurostimulation to suppress seizures by blocking signals to the thalamus. Oran’s transformation has given him newfound independence, with hopes high for broader application of this promising treatment in pediatric epilepsy care.
