Scalite: tiles made entirely of fish scales

A company in France creates tiles made entirely of fish scales.

Fish scales from salmon and other fish species contain organic and mineral materials.  Collagen is extracted from the organic materials during the manufacturing process and acts as a binder when remixed with the mineral portion of the material.  When mixed, these elements create the basis of a stone-like material pressed into sheets called Scalite.

Scalite is stone-like, making it an excellent alternative to ceramic tiles.  You can bond it directly onto cement board or plywood and cut it using traditional table saws and machines.  Its applications include wall coverings, furniture, and home accessories.

What’s unique about Scalite is that you don’t need additives or binders to create it, unlike other natural materials like bioplastics and natural cement.   This means it’s healthy and environment-friendly.
