Scientists successfully generated nuclear fusion energy.
Nuclear fusion is a process through which two light atomic nuclei are combined to form a single heavy one, creating massive energy. The same technology is used in nuclear weapons. For decades, scientists have tried to harness the same power for civilian use.
Researchers at the Livermore National Laboratory in the US used a process known as inertia confinement fusion. Pellets of hydrogen plasma were bombarded by the world’s largest laser in a lab. The process saw fusion resulting in more energy than they put into the laser.
This achievement could help us win our race against climate change. Nuclear energy could produce sufficient power to end the use of fossil fuels. Moving forward, the researchers will work on improving the process to see if they can produce commercially viable energy.
