Ultium-based EV can recover energy from battery

General Motors announced its plan to fit its electric vehicle with a newly patented heat pump that recovers energy from the battery and helps conserve range.

The heat pump turns excess heat from the batteries, power electronics, drivetrain friction, and even braking into electrical energy.  This energy then feeds back to the electric car’s batteries.  The energy recovery system can also catch and use humidity inside and outside the vehicle.

The new system can help improve the electric vehicle’s range.  It can also adjust the cabin temperature faster than its current air conditioning systems.  Overall, it helps with the electric car’s efficiency, performance, and overall benefit to customers.

Seeing the initial benefits of the heat pump system, this development looks very promising.  Are you excited about this advancement?  Will other companies follow the same path to developing innovative cars?  Please comment your thoughts below.
